Russian Museum, St. Petersburg
Since it’s a 19th century week, I wanted to share something I saw in the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg. I really don’t know much anything about this painting, exept that it’s probably painted either in St. Petersburg or in Paris, where Repin moved in 1876. Here's the wikipaintings page of the painting, and this is where I found the image.
It was Sonia Sanchez who said, “The black artist is dangerous. Black art controls the “Negro’s” reality, negates negative influences, and creates positive images.”
Black contemporary art has met resistance from the white dominated art world. An arena that limited itself from a diverse aesthetic of culture and vibrancy. Galleries of “white walls, with white people, drinking white wine.”
Yet, black artists continued to produce, whether accepted by the white dominated art world or not, and produced some of the greatest and memorable pieces in contemporary American art.
Me and my brotha Kuri at graduation…I had to tie his bow tie for him. #honoredthis deserves 100k notes and more
Black men graduating! Black men winning! More pix like this should be spread around the net!
